The goal of guidance is to assist children in developing respect, self-control, and sensitivity in their interactions with others.
At the Maranatha Child CARE Centre, we believe that each child is a unique individual, and that children differ in terms of their activity level, distractibility, and sensitivity. Therefore, we have reasonable expectations which are consistent with each child's development abilities. We are committed to nurturing and guiding young children in an atmosphere which fosters trust, security, and comfort, where children can learn to relate to each other in positive ways.
Our guidance strategies are first and foremost prevention oriented in order to create a positive climate and to minimize behaviour problems. This is achieved by:
-
establishing clear and simple limits that are consistently and positively enforced in a straightforward manner,
-
stating what is expected (by focusing on the child's behaviour rather than on the child), and
-
staying close and being alert so that we are able to reinforce appropriate behaviour with words and gestures.
When there are incidences of inappropriate behaviour, we will intervene with guidance that is supportive rather than punitive. This is achieved by:
-
respectfully gaining the child's attention and acknowledging their feelings before redirecting their behaviour,
-
offering appropriate choices by using natural and logical sequences in a non-threatening way,
-
removing the child from the situation to a quiet area of the room and explaining to the child what the inappropriate behaviour was, and
-
as a supportive measure, physically holding the child, only if there is a concern for the child's safety or the safety of others.
Physical punishment, isolation, or bullying will not be used under any circumstances.
Parents/guardians are encouraged to ask the staff questions if they are unclear about the handling of any incident within the Centre. As partners guiding your child through these key development years, we need parents to work closely and honestly with us.
We would be pleased to discuss any questions you may have about any aspect of our Guidance Policy.
Safe Release of Children Policy
At the Maranatha Child CARE Centre the safety of the children in our care is of the utmost importance. Therefore, all children must be signed in and signed out each day that they attend.
WHO?
Children will only be released to an adult over the age of 16 who is authorized on the child's registration form to do so. Picture ID may be required. Any change of authorization must be done in writing to the Centre. A child will not be denied release to a natural parent, unless a copy of the custody agreement or court restraining order that relinquishes or denies such parental rights is on file.
Any person authorized to pick up a child who seems intoxicated or otherwise unable to function properly (i.e., slurred speech, unsteady walk, uncoordinated muscular ability, odour of alcohol, etc.) at the time of pick-up will be discouraged from taking the child. If they are insistent on taking the child, the staff are required to contact the police immediately.
WHEN?
Our hours of operation are 7:30 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. No child may remain in our care for more than 13 hours.
-
If your child is not picked up by the Centre's closing time, you will be contacted.
-
If we are unable to reach you, the emergency designee will be contacted and the child will be released to that individual.
-
Should none of the emergency designees be available, the Ministry of Children and Families will be contacted.
A "late fee" will be charged for any pick-up after the Centre's closing time.
